Plastic surgery is a medical specialty focused on the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be performed for medical reasons (to treat injuries, birth defects, or diseases) or for cosmetic reasons (to improve appearance).
There are two main types:
- Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
- Focuses on repairing or restoring function and normal appearance after trauma, disease, birth defects, or surgery.
- Examples: cleft lip repair, burn reconstruction, breast reconstruction after cancer, skin grafting.
- Cosmetic Plastic Surgery
- Aims to enhance or improve a person’s appearance, even when there is no medical need.
- Examples: rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), liposuction, facelift, breast augmentation.
